KamLAND: the kiloton scintillator detector that pinned down Δm²₂₁

From a converted Japanese mine, a 1,000-ton tank of liquid scintillator caught reactor antineutrinos from 53 power plants across Japan and Korea. Its 2003 result established that reactor neutrinos oscillate at exactly the rate the solar neutrino problem predicted.

Geo-neutrinos: listening to Earth's radioactive heart

About half of Earth's internal heat comes from radioactive decay. Geo-neutrino experiments at KamLAND and Borexino are slowly turning that fact into a measurement — and revealing the planet's hidden chemistry.
